I think winning only 1-0 isn't really the true reflection of how dominant India were in this series. I know that the bottom line won't say that they won the last Test match, but they really did. New Zealand were saved by the weather but that's part of it.
It was probably a poor declaration by MS Dhoni when he batted too long, he should have known that the weather could change on the last day. He would have been aware of that and he could have backed his bowlers not to concede 600 or so runs. So, you got to take that too into the account too. They made a slight mistake and New Zealand were able to get out with a draw.
I think apart from the first half of the second Test match, it was a complete dominant display by India. This Indian side would be one of the best sides to tour this country, it's a side that is on the move upwards, a side that is confident, a side that has tremendous experience, it's got some good younger players coming through, it's well balanced and it's one heck of a good team.
Ideally with day light saving comings out in this Test match and reverting back to normal standard time here in New Zealand, an earlier start would have made more sense. Obviously, I don't know exactly what the process was, but there would have been a trade off with the television hours over in India, and we decided that the time would stay the same. There was always going to be an opportunity to make up for half an hour every morning to make sure that not too much time was lost. It's just what happens when you schedule the games late in the summer, which is ironically our best weather. So you are less likely to lose time anyway through bad weather but you've also got the stand at Wellington behind which the sun goes down and that is unfortunate. So had the same thing occurred at some other ground then you might not have lost as much time.
I always expected India to be dominant side in the Test matches based on their past, the way they have been going and how well they have been playing. There was hope that New Zealand could compete with them. There were always going to be areas of concern, and I think there are still areas of concern when it comes to the top order. It was expected that the pitches would be relatively flat after what happened last time when India came here, and that it would be difficult for New Zealand to get twenty wickets, which was shown in the second Test.
I don't think New Zealand will be happy with their performance simply because they were only dominant through one very good batting display in Napier and an exceptional bowling display in the first innings of the Napier game. So I think they will be relatively disappointed; they know they can be better and they haven't answered all the questions against a good Test playing nation as they probably would have liked to.
The top order is a definite concern for New Zealand right now, especially the opening position. Daniel Flynn didn't have a particularly good series but he has shown enough that there is something there. Martin Guptill has got some real talent and I think he has shown enough that in the future he may be able to have a real go at that opening spot. Tim McIntosh lost a lot of form and there is concern for him. The problem is that they are not getting a big total from the top three right now as a unit, and had to rely on the middle order, which is starting to look quite good at the moment. So there is a real positive with the batting of Ross Taylor and Jesse Ryder.
There are still lot of concerns for the bowling unit. They still don't have a genuine spearhead, but we have known that for quite some time. It's not that it has just cropped up and surprised us. And also I think people have just started to question Daniel Vettori's ability to take wickets on the last day of the Test match, with that opportunity he had on the last day of the Test match in Napier. Something that he needs to work out for himself, and there is some hard work for him on that front. There are still concerns around this bowling attacks ability to take 20 wickets in batting conditions and the usual top order woes.
Well as far as this tour was concerned, I think New Zealand wanted to see the best of Sachin Tendulkar and they got that. I think that was a massive positive for everyone concerned who enjoys cricket. There were six Test match centuries scored by New Zealand and that's a record for a three match rubber. So that's a real positive as far as New Zealand in concerned. Double century of Jesse Ryder was fantastic. People who enjoy cricket will appreciate what Gautam Gambhir achieved on this tour. There was a lot of good cricket played and there were good performances from most of the cricketers on display, and as far as just watching the various skills involved in cricket, take the bottom line result out of it and people should be pleased with what they saw.
It started in the one-dayers. India were smashing New Zealand but the New Zealanders were actually enjoying watching it because it was good and there was some really good cricket played at times. And that's probably going to be the lasting memory of the series for me.
